EU programme “School Milk and Fruit” has gained great popularity among children and young people over the years.
In year 2020/ 2021 there were 1302 educational institutions involved in the programme, of which 1235 institutions distributed fruit and vegetables, and 1170 institutions distributed milk. In these educational institutions, 255,875 students (92% of the target audience) received free fruit and vegetables – 1,023 tons, and 246,302 students (88% of the target audience) received 2484 tons of milk.
In total, more than 40.5 thousand tons of milk and milk products (since 2004) and more than 8.8 thousand tons of fruit and vegetables (since 2010) have been used in EU funded programmes for schools in Latvia by 2021. Total value of distributed products reaches 40.3 million euros (national and EU funding).
To promote the program in 2018-2021 several educational and informative events were implemented: seminars for teachers, a competition for pre-school students “From seed to table”, “ZZ Championships” and a competition in social networks, information was provided also in media, etc.
It should be noted that the Covid-19 pandemic had a major impact. Learning process in schools took place mainly on a remote basis, which resulted in lower product distribution and a very limited range of additional educational and information activities.
