The delivery of seedling boxes to kindergartens has begun. This year, the children will grow colourful sunflowers and tomatoes

As the warmer weather and planting season begin, the Rural Support Service, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, carries out the annual educational activity ‘Watch a Plant Grow from a Seed!’, helping children to learn about the process of growing plants and the basics of agriculture. In partnership with the ‘Dimzas’ nursery, seedling-growing kits are being delivered to preschools this year.

Last year, the children grew tomatoes and mint; this year, they will be growing ‘Venus’ cherry tomatoes and ‘Teddy Bear’ sunflowers. Through hands-on activities, children develop patience and responsibility, and gain an understanding of how food is produced and the importance of choosing healthy products in daily life.

Plant nursery owner Andrejs Vītoliņš emphasises:

‘This educational project allows preschool-aged children to learn about plant cultivation and natural processes through hands-on experience. The kits include all the necessary materials — seeds, soil and other supplies — so that children can observe the development of their plants from seed to harvest. The project is being implemented as part of the ‘Milk and Fruit for Schools’ programme, building on its concept and helping children to better understand where food comes from and the importance of local produce in their diet.’

Each growing kit is prepared so that work can begin immediately. It includes potting mix, seeds, pots, markers and stakes to support the plants, as well as informational materials.

The “Milk and Fruit for Schools” programme aims to encourage healthy eating habits in children in the long term. It is funded by the state budget and European Union funds.
