From the beginning of October, children of educational institutions in Latvia receive milk, fruits and vegetables. This year distribution of fruits and vegetables is taking place in 1,328 educational institutions, 1,230 educational institutions receive milk. In total, 269,337 children eat healthy fruits and vegetables and drink nutritious milk in schools and kindergartens in Latvia.
Goal of the programme “School Milk and Fruit” is to promote the formation of healthy eating and nutrition habits among children, which would be sustainable throughout their future lives, as well as to increase the promotion of healthy food consumption among pupils.
Preschoolers and 1st-9th graders can get milk and fruits and vegetables free of charge in school three times a week. Product range includes pasteurized milk, apples, pears, cabbage, kohlrabi, carrots, pumpkins, kale, cranberries (only in assorted ingredients), but in the school year 2024./2025. also cucumbers, parsnips and tomatoes.
